When you turn on an MH light, does it just instantly turn on? Or does it start off very dim and gradually warm up to full intensity?

Just adding that if they get shut off, they will need to cool down a bit before they will re-ignite.

Oh thats cool, so they somewhat simulate the suns gradual brightening.

no not really. It only takes a few minutes for it reach the full brightness. Still alot faster than the sun.

only about 5-10 mins to get to full heat and if you turn it off hot you have to wait 10 mins b4 you can turn it back on like bj n erin said

they get hot to so make sure there about 1foot-1.5feet above the tank, my tank i have a glass top and a plastic support beam on top it cracked the glass top and started to melt the beam when i fist put it on lol

If your tank is open top and large enough the heat generated won't really be that much of a problem. On my 75 I've got 2 250w MH only about 4-5 inches above the water and my temp doesn't go up at all during the day.
