i have a 29 gallon with a 300 gph overflow, if i run water into refugium, could i use a fluval 204 to pump it back up to the display, its 180 gph.

The overflow will only drain what is being pumped back into the tank it will work but the flow will be very slow in the fuge.I have done it on small 5 or ten gallon nanos with a fluval 204.Your overflow is capable of running at 300gph but if you are only returning 180 gph to the tank then the overflow will run at 180 gph.Go for it use what have you may really like the results

itts in a 29 gallon so maby i will use a 304 for some extra flow. also where you using any media in the fluval, or just using it as a pump?

dont use any media in it just use it for a return..
you could however use it for media down the road such as for carbon or phasphate remover if needed..

204 would give you in the region of 140-180gph
304 would give you in the region of 200-260gph

Its very hard to pinpoint the exact GPH for the amount of line you are pumping through.
