I've been toying with the Idea of upgrading the forum software on Living Reefs sometime this year - but I wouldn't do this unless it got the thumbs up from the moderators and members on the site!

So far, I've tested out some new software on www.cathow.com and www.doghow.com, and it seems to be a big improvement in many areas on the forum software we've got in place here. However, it lacks support for a proper gallery at the moment (but I expect one will be released by mid year).

What would you guys think of changing to the same software as we have over there? There wouldn't a be a huge change in design from the one we've got, so the layout and feel of the site would be very similar to how it is now - and I wouldn't move unless we could at least match all of the features we've currently got (gallery, chat and so on).

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this, even if it would be a while before changing the forum software is considered :).

There will always be issues and whining with change ;) But if you think the new software would be good, go for it. I like everything about this site -- as long as the basic design feel of the site as similar as possible, I say go for it.

When you say "gallery", you mean for pics right? A lot of us use Photobucket or another photo service anyway.

The forum software is broadly similar - if you try a couple of pages on the sites linked to above, you'll see how it works. I'd match the design to this site though.

The gallery would replace this one (Aquarium Photo Gallery) - so using photobucket in threads wouldn't change (although the image uploading is much better and allows for multiple uploads in one go).

The site won't be changed anytime soon - it's something I'm just considering for the future, and only if it got postive feedback from members on here.

I say go for it. A little change from time to time is a good thing. I don't think there will be a mass upheaval over it if it still functions the same, or close to it.

Sounds good to me, change is always interesting. Can we go for a deep sea theme this time around and make it a murkier, darker blue environment? All this light happy blue is beginning to drive me crazy.

And of course it's all about MY needs.

And we're always up for donating I'm sure, I love this site.

Thanks for the feedback guys - as soon as there is a way to move the gallery over to the new software then I'll start working on a test to see how it looks :D.

NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! I really think this change is bad. I think we should all go back to being pen pals.

As long the function of the forum is the same, we don't lose all the info on the site, and especially chat is still available, I say go for it.

Me too, but I also dont think you need to worry about the gallery very much, not many people use it.

I say holds off for better gallery support. I work with industrial strength software everyday and upgrades to the latest version are not always worth the effort and the risks.
