You dont need to be gentle. I have ripped branches off before. Scissors work great, just chop an arm off or something. They are tough cookies!

My Kenya has recently been growing like a weed all over my tank and I just pull the strays just like I would weed the garden. Just rip it out. On that note if anyone lives close to me and wants some Kenya let me know because lately I have been flushing a lot of baby trees. Don't have a LFS that wants it.
