    Hey folks :)

As some of you may know, this forum has a sister site for garden ponds - well that forum started to get some gardening questions, so I ended up creating a new site to cater for that called www.gardening-forums.com.

Anyway, it's pretty active now and I thought it may be of interest to any keen gardeners on here (especially now that it's almost spring) :bounce:.

Another reason I mention this is that it uses some newer forum software to Living Reefs and I wondered what you thought of it? In time we'll end up upgrading LR (including some frequently requested features such as better mobile support and more articles). If you do end up visiting the gardening site, please let me know what you think of the new software in this thread, as it will help me know if it's the right thing for LR in time.

There are some pretty neat features that the new software includes:
    • It's much faster!
    • You can enable instant on-site alerts (like facebook) when someone quotes you, likes a post or replies to something.
    • It's possible to add a showcase section all about your tank.
    • We can add trophies and other goodies for milestones
    • Uploads are WAY easier (and you can do multiple ones with a single click).
Would be interested in what you think :).

Nice looking site! I think the change to the forum format would take some adjusting to... It looks very different. I like it though.

I like it! Is that the same format as the freshwater one?

    Thanks for the feedback :)

Yep, it's the same software as the freshwater forums site. At some point, the software will need to be updated to work with the latest secure versions of PHP/MySQL (it's fine for the time being though) - the latest version of the vBulletin software we're using at the moment isn't great (here's their site running v5: Forums - vBulletin Community Forum).

I can make the XenForo software look very similar to the current theme on LivingReefs which would ease the transition (if/when the time comes). Plus, there are some really handy extra features I can code to improve the database section and chat.

As the time comes closer, I'll post more about it - but it's still a long way off before needing to decide :).

I did a little bit of playing round with the LR design for the new forum software (while working on the freshwater forums). Here's a very, very rough screenshot of what it could look like (just ignore the fact the it's using the freshwater site for content and has jagged edges on text etc...):

    Thanks Ted, hope so :).

Once the forum software progresses to the next version, I'll take a look at running a "test" site where we can all give the Living Reefs upgrade a test to see what people think.

I hadn't checked out the Graden forums, but have been checking out the freshwater more often. I like that format and think it would be a fairly easy transition on this end of things.

I think your gardening forum will be a success.

Glad to see you have a forum on greenhouses! I have concerns about the food supply, horse meat, tainted meats, Mad Cow, E Coli, etc, I plan on setting up a greenhouse and becoming more self-sufficient.

But I am happy to see people getting more self sufficient.

I like the look of the new software, Ian. I don't think it would be too hard to get used to.
