I've had luck with bacterial additives like "Special Blend". My tank did cycle in less than a week. Also, try to use 50% of the initial water from a change out on another tank. If you add new sand that will cause a bigger cycle. The bagged aragonite says it contains lots of "live bacteria" but there is also a lot of dead stuff in there will cause the tank to cycle..

Does using mature tank water from another tank really work? I didn't think the bacteria was held in the water column but in the rock and substrate?

You would be much better off with rocks and a cup of sand from an established tank. There is some bacteria in the water column but it pales in comparison to what is in the rocks and sand.

Unfortunately I can't take any if the rock out of my 29 gallon...I could maybe put a cup of sand in there though.
