I just notice this algae growing in my internal overflow... is it bad or is this normal? Also do I need to take it off?

Thats fairly normal with reef ready tanks.
What I usually do for mine,is take a tooth brush and wipe the algae loose. It'll get pulled into the sump that way.Or you can even just pull it out by hand.I've done that to.

If you don't trim it it could cause overflow problems. When I first discovered that same algae in my overflow i did not trim because I figured it was reducing nitrates and phosphates, and being in the overflow, it was not unsightly. Then, one day my tank nearly overflowed because the algae was blocking the the holes on my standpipe. :-o So, my adivce is not to worry about it, but to make sure you don't let it block your stand pipe.
