GSP will coexist for a little while with the mushroom but eventually the GSP would choke it out. The only defense I know of with GSP in the tank is isolation in the sandbed.

I personally love GSP :) but yes, I would keep it separated

I peel off my GSP when I see it, and toss it in the garbage.
