You looking for a summer carry or winter, and does caliber matter to you? I would go to a range and rent some guns to test them out first. And make sure you test and feel the models you'll carry. A full size will feel and shoot different then a carry gun.

    EXACTLY!!!
My XD is the full size 45acp and its got some heft to it, especially with 14 rounds loaded in it. I don't notice it when carrying, but I don't try to conceal it either. Matter of fact, if my guns concealled, its because I was just to lazy to tuck my shirt tail in.

An ankle holster is going to be rough. I personally wouldn't carry a double stack pistol on my ankle, it would just leave too big of a print for me. Even the baby glocks are just wide guns. I have concealed a full size M9, and full size 1911 in the past but my current carry is a G19. Even with that I'm thinking about going smaller, I've been looking a lot at the pocket pistols or something like the EMP from Springfield.

Look at an XDs. Single stack mag and 5+1 capacity. Comes in the flavors of 9mm, 40, and 45. :D
    The XDs 45 isn't much bigger than a 380.

Now this is a real thread!
I absolutely live the M&P .40. Enough stopping power, but doesn't kill your wrists, 15 rounds and light enough to carry. Not sure about the compact models, but I'm sure I would like it. I believe they have that pinky extension and full sized grips, right?

I thought the XD's were heavy, personally, but I have heard lots of good stuff about them, and come to think, nothing bad that I remember.

The full size XD is heavy.Especially the XD 45.
When you got 14 rounds 45acp hanging in the mag well, it adds some heft. But that weight also lends to accuracy. :D

This was 7 rounds at 21 feet in just under a second with my XD 45.

    Yep. I load for my 45acp, 223, 22-250, and 6.8spc.
I have to reload for my 45 because I shoot at least 25 rounds a day with it. The rifles I load for, are all custom loads for accuracy since I varmint hunt with em.

Only thing I don't like about a 357, is that super keen pop when you touch it off. Makes my eardrums scram for relief.

lol yes, yes it does. The .357 I have came with 4 different barrels, 3 inch, 6, 9 and 12. I use mine for Deer every year. My main Conceal Carry is my Baretta 92 9mm.
