Good luck with your clam, they usually really prefer very bright lighting from metal halide or T5. Do you have PC flourescents or T5, do you know?
I'd get as large a tank as you can afford, it's very expensive to try and upgrade and move everything later on once your critters are established. If you think you can afford a 120, go for it!
 
ok and i have been told my clam is ok he is less than 3 inches from the surface and he reacts to shadows and is not gasping. and sorry all i know is that they are 192 watt floresent compacts
 
Welcome to the reef...

Not bad for a 40 G but not the greatest for Corals... you could get away with softies... The clam may or may not have the best time in there...
 
just be sure to slowly acclimate your clam & corals to the new lighting when you upgrade, you don't want to shock them with this new, more powerful "Sun" you put over them :)
