HOB Algae Scrubber?

I wanted to build an algae scrubber for my 10g, but to avoid cluttering I want to make something outside of the tank.

I was thinking about buying a: Aqua Clear Hang-On-Back Power Filter, UL Listed - (30 or 50 model)

then placing my roughed-up mesh grid down into the HOB filter. Then placing 2 submersible lights in it (or maybe just one bright CFL over the grid).

Any reason why this would not work well?

It looks too small for an algae scrubber.
You might be better off with a DIY project with a larger growing area to accommodate algae growth.

Outside of the tank is how the algae scrubber was originally developed. Why don't you do the "above the tank" gravity fed bucket scrubber?

One pump in tank to the scrubber above the tank, let gravity feed the water back down into the display.
