How long until DSB starts to work?

Reefing newb
I just added a refugium last weekend. My refugium is what used to be my 15g sump and has two compartments. It's fed by an overflow from a 10g tank (new sump) that holds my skimmer in it. The first compartment has my 6" DSB (super fine grained sand with LR rubble on top). Because the refugium isn't tall enough, to put chaeto over sand safely , I will have the chaeto in the second compartment with a return pump. Also that second compartment already has a perfect set up to hold the egg crate which will hold the light for the chaeto.

1. How long does the DSB take to start working? (and how the heck do the anaerobic algae even get in there if they die in oxygen?)

2. Will the chaeto be ok without sand and how much trouble will I have keeping it out of the return pump?

Im never home when I want to post so I don't have a pic at the moment.

A year? Yikes. Then they should advertise it like this:

"Your new DSB will be amazing and wipe out your nitrates...in a year, ha ah ha ah ha ha ha, you fool!"
