If you have ever walked along the beach, especially on a windy day, you may have seen a brown foam near the water or on top of the water. Airy, bubbly water will tend to lift the organic crud out of the water. Skimmers work on the same principle.
The crud, if left in your tank, will break down into nitrates and phosphates which can kill coral and fish.
