I Got A Free 29G tank Today

An RC flying buddy called me yesterday and offered me a 29g tank. He had been using it for a freshwater goldfish, but his daughter killed the fish. He gave me the tank, and some accessories.

The tank is an All Glass. It measures 30" long x 18" high x 12" width--front to back. It's kinda scratched up on all sides. I'll save it for when I finally become a member of the Big Tank Club and use it for a refugium.

Now if I can just find a place to store it ......................

I already got the 30g high tank. I'm not interested in another smaller tank. This would basically be a 30g long. It's 30" long, so kinda funky to get lights for it. Good lights, anyway. I think a true 30g long would be 36" long. Can't remember for sure though.

It's kinda scratched up too. Wouldn't be the prettiest display tank.

Sure would make a nice frag tank or a refugium for a larger tank. I dunno. I'll just hang onto it for a bit and see what comes down the road. I missed out on a 125g tank for FREE last week. Some gal had it on craigslist, "Come and get it" and I showed up right when the other guy was driving away with the tank. SOB!! :frustrat: 15 minutes too late!

I do have the old 24" PC light fixture sitting here in a box. 130w

This tank is 30" long. Could I partition off the back 6" of the tank and use that as a skimmer compartment? Then use the spare CPR HOB refugium? My light would fit on top of the tank if I partitioned it out into a 24" section and a 6" section.

Just an idea.

ooo, that would have severly ticked me off about the 125 gallon! that would be allmost as bad as fighting a ten pound bass right up to the bank, only to have it snap you're line. had THAT happen to me last weekend! talking about a little hissy fit and throwing poles and kicking tackle box's!

so RC, what are you going to do with it? wait or get a frag tank going?

I'm not sure yet. I cleaned it up using a sponge and baking soda w/hot water. It's pretty scratched up.

I'd love to set up a frag tank. But, maybe I'm not doing it for the right reasons? I want to do the frag tank to try and make money. I look at the prices people charge for frags and it just amazes me. I think these reef critters are drastically overpriced. The entrapeneur in me wants to build a frag tank and get rich--at these prices--how could you NOT get rich? But, the socialist in me wants to deliver a crushing blow to the market and sell thousands of frags for a buck apiece.

People have told me that having a frag tank is more about trading with friends, than making money. Nice idea, but is it realistic?

SOMEBODY is growing frags and selling them for a nice price. I've seen pics of MASSIVE propogation systems with total capacity in the thousands of gallons. With literally, thousands of frags on eggcrate racks.

If you're not going to sell the frags and make money--then why bother with a frag tank? They will grow just as well in the display tank--no? If all you want to do is grow a few frags to trade with friends--then why go to the expense of a frag tank?

:faint:

There is a guy in Tucson that has a 40 gallon frag tank, that pays his rent with it. He makes a TON of money. He initially had to invest in the rare, more expensive corals, but makes a ton of cash just fragging off those colonies.

I doubt you will be ruling the world with your 29gallon frag tank. You might make a few bucks, but SPS grow SOOOO slow as compared to other things. I only sell mushrooms back to the LFS and make enough to cover salt. They grow SUPER FAST and it takes 2-3 months to get enough growth to make it worth my effort. I think you should do it for the love of the hobby and if you can turn a profit, good on ya. I plan on running one in the future, but just for myself and to return to the fish stores for a bit of profit. Up to you.

If your out to make money on this, then stick to rare and unusual species. You can charge boocoo money for Acan Lords and Blastos but won't get squat for kenyas.
