If i recall, the free swimming stage comes out at night when the fish are laying near or on the substrate for the night.
If you have inverts in the tank, you will have to remove all your fish and put them in a hospital tank and treat them for the duration that the medicine directions state. Then wait about a month before you put them back into your display tank. That is the life cycle of ich. It will pass from cyst to larvea and then die if there are no fish to attack.
