identfy this snail

That is a nassarius snail -- good sand sifter.

thanks much. is there any special needs of the snail? it also burrows underneath the sand and stays there for a while. i got this from a lfs and the guy told me the name, but forgot. is there another name for it.

That's the only name I know for it. It's possible it's called other things.

It doesn't require anything special. It's one of the most common snails kept as part of the clean up crew. In a 40 gallon tank, you should probably get a few more.
