    Hey everybody!
I am new to saltwater, but I have a really quick question. I was planning to buy live rock and live sand for my aquarium. Do I have to do anything special to it and can live rock/sand die?

    From,
    Adam

If it were me I would buy some dry rock (it's cheaper) then you can seed it with a little live rock.

To answer your question if you buy live rock it will need to be kept alive by keeping it in saltwater with flow and temps at an acceptable level. Live sand will be in a sealed bag and can be used whenever your ready.

I also believe is order to keep live rock alive, it will need a food source (amonia) from a fish or something else

Benefits for live rock and live sand?

    Hey
I was wondering what are the benefits to live rock/sand. Are there and precautions I have to take? What do I do with it once I get it? i.e. do I have to clean it somehow..

    Thanks!

    First,

Just add this question to your existing thread, don't have to make a new one.

Live rock and Sand have bacteria in it that benefits the tank. They help nitrates and such go down by consuming them etc.

No you don't have to clean it, get it and put it in your tank with saltwater and a cycle will start.
