Live Rock Question

Quick question:

Before I set my live rock to cure I'll be scrubbing off dead matter with a tooth brush. During this process can my rock set in unsalted water for a few minutes or no?

You don't want to. It will kill stuff on it. Instead scrub it off in a bucket of salt water.
