LR Rubble in HOB Filter

I have an Aquaclear 50 HOB filter that I've grown attached too. I've decided to stop running the bio filter and filter sponge. What I'm thinking of doing is putting activated carbon on the bottom, laying a small piece of egg crate over top of it to act as a base and putting some LR rubble on top of that and using this as my filter. The filter is not big enough to convert to a fuge but do you think the LR and activated carbon would be better than the biomax and sponge?

it eould be better if you put the rock on the bottom and carbon on top. you have to change the carbon but not the rock

Do I need to have a light on the rock or is it fine without? Just rock and carbon good? can I add phosphate reducer?

u can probably get away with just using rock and no carbon and never have to change anything. imo...
