Magnesium Sources

BigH55

I'm that guy
So if you haven't noticed, im really into making my own chemicals. Is it true that epsom salts is a good source of Magnesium? If not what is? Its very hard to find Magnesium at the LFS's around here.

Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) is OK for occassional use only. If you are also dosing a DIY 2-part solution, you should not use Epsom salts alone.....you will be adding to much sulfates. I can't find MagFlake anywhere locally, which is the only safe DIY magnesium, so I order magnesium chloride hexahydrate from Bulk Reef Supply.

according to Randy Holmes-Farley epsom salts and magnesium chloride hexahydrate should be mixed as follows for Mg supplementation

3 cups epsom salts
5 cups MgChHex
1 gallon Ro/Di

It seems like a lot but they are both very water soluable and will go into solution very quickly. One tip after you measure out the MgChHex put it in a gallon ziploc bad and smash the crap out of it with a rolling pin. It makes it go throught the funnel a lot easier.
