I REALLY wanna just zip it off with a dremel tool.
The question I have is: Is it safe to do so? Does it serve some sort of purpose that I am not aware of? (like holding the tension of the middle of the tank?)

The beam is for support and its the silicon holding the glass that could bow. Maybe the 75 glass would be think enough, but there has to be a reason why tank company put them on there.

It is to keep the tank from bowing, I would not take a chance and fill it without replacing or fixing it. You could try to build a splint out of a couple pieces of plastic and use gorilla glue. Gorilla glue has amazing strength.

The only tank I'd run without a center brace is one that was designed to function with out it
