Nasty Water

I am about 2 weeks into my cycle. I have noticed that on the top of my tank there is this film, it is disgusting to look at. Almost looks like oil, but its grimy when you touch it.

I checked all my levels yesterday and my PH is around 7.8, ammonia is 0.25-0.50, Nitrate and Nitrites were at 0.

Any help will be awesome.

It sounds like dissolved organic compounds. Your protein skimmer will alleviate the problem.

If you dont have a skimmer yet you should get one it will help. If you cannot get one you should try pointing one of your powerheads up to the top to help break it up.

the seaclones are total crap, dont waste your money on them

You want to get a skimmer rate for twice your water volume. Also look for a reef octopus or hydro bubble skimmer. Neither costs much more but will deliver results that are a million times better

You can use a paper towel to absorb the scmutz off of the water until you get a skimmer.
