About how many hermit crabs/crabs, snails, shrimp, and starfish would be recommended for a 46 gallon aquarium?

Thats a loaded question that only your tank can answer.:D
I'd start with:
3 or 4 hermits
maybe 10 Nassarius snails
3 or 4 cerith snails
3 or 4 trochus snails
and 3 or 4 asteria snails
You dont want so many that they start starving to death.But you want enough to keep the tank cleaned up.
Then after the tanks been cycled for a couple of months,maybe add you a couple of shrimp.Just stay away from camal shrimp if you plan to have corals.
The same for stars.The serpents are great as are the brittle stars.Just stay away from the big green brittle.Their called the green death for a reason.Their active and deadly fish predators.
You dont want so many that they start starving to death.But you want enough to keep the tank cleaned up.
