with it being a mushroom, you should be fine placing it anywhere that you want it.

yes it will, but probably a little slower. you will see itty bitty little mushrooms growing from underneath the main shrooms cap.

I am thinking about putting it in the middle of my tank resting on my sand bed. Anything wrong with placing it directly on the sand near some live rock to hopefully grow on

Or would it be better to place it directly onto a piece of live rock in my tank. I am just affarid my snails or fish might knock it over.

the babies are on the bottom of the pic and the bluish blob is an older baby that has just eaten. these are my Bali Ricordeas.

the snails and crabs should not bother them enough to knock them off.

Put it up on your rocks. If it's just sitting on the sandbed, there won't be anywhere for it to spread to. And it will get moved around by the current, and you might lose it in your tank.

I do worry a lot. O well better safe than sorry. I placed it on top of a rock and wedged it into a few more rocks. Hope it spreads.

Do I need to worry about feeding them anything special or will they be fine just stuff floating in the water?

it should do fine there. it looks a little big for any crabs or snails to knock over. no feeding required.
