Nikon d3000 questions......??????

Hey everyone my fiance' just got a brand new Nikon D3000. Everything on the camera is still factory including the lens so does anybody know how to get some good shots with that camera with out having to upgrade the lens? I have tried messing with the white balance like some people have suggested but i just cant seem to figure it out. Any tips would be great thanks alot.

I have the D5000, I don't think the stock lens are crappy... That's the only lens that I have!

I don't have a nikon ,but my head is still spinning trying to figure out my new DSLR.. ..get a book for dummies,i just got one and have been learning alot from it
