Some sort of system to break the back flow is pretty critical, if you were to lose power you dont want a bunch of tank draining down into the sumer causing it to overflow

Sorry my question was worded wrong lf, i was wondering if slime of some sort would build up on the orifice on the back flow preventor causung failure or drilling a hole would cause splatter outside of the tank. What would be the pros or cons to these?

I have two holes drilled in my return just below the water line. Why two? well If a snail is on one when I have a power outage then I have a back up and hope the snail didnt bring a friend. Just below the water line also makes it where I have no splashing. I know some people use back flow preventers but then they still dill a hole just below the water line as a back up because they can fail.
