    it's been said a couple times but the peripheral costs are what's killer. Combine those with the fact that when it's time to save pennies no one is out spending money on their hobbies (OK that's a lie I'm pretty poor and still overspend on my tanks). The fact that you will be rent free will certainly be helpful. My advice would be to try and acquire whatever you can slowly, preferably used, and don't just jump into it. Also I know a few people that have turned their hobby into their profession and it turned them sour towards their hobby. I would also second the idea of starting in your garage if possible.
