Over flow question

Reefing newb
On my 180 gallon tank that I am about to take down and redo It has 2 over flows built in. In each over flow there is a supply and return. I want to use both of them as a return but there isnt enough room in there to put another r shaped return. What would happen if i just ran a pipe up to almost the same height as the return inlet that I already have?

Ill attach a really really rough drawing LOL

I want to increase my return rate with out putting an extra over flow box or anyting on.

My return stand pipe has an X cut in the top of it with some bent plastic inserted into the x so there is enough sticking out to hold a PVC cap that is a size too big snug. The the top of the cap is drilled for a piece of air line to be stuffed down the pipe and adjusted to silence the burps and gurgles.

This takes very little more room than just the stand pipe and works perfectly. It is a lot like the movie but does not require all those holes to be drilled and leaves out the adapter bushing with the bent plastic holding the cap.
