I was wondering if I could ask a quick favour from any techie minded members, as I'm looking at upgrading the current webserver and I'm debating a couple of server locations :).

If you could post your average ping times to the following domains, that would be a huge help - as I can see which location works out fastest for most people:

    speedtest.dal01.softlayer.com
    speedtest.wdc01.softlayer.com

If you could also post your State (if from USA) or Country, that would be a big help.

From the UK, my results are:

    speedtest.dal01.softlayer.com - 138ms
    speedtest.wdc01.softlayer.com - 101ms

Thanks for the results everyone :).

I'm still after a few more, ideally some from the West Coast so that I can see how ping times are on the other site.

If you've not done a ping before, you can do it by loading the command prompt ("cmd" from the run box) and then typing:

    ping speedtest.dal01.softlayer.com

    and

    ping speedtest.wcd01.softlayer.com

You should get text very similar to ccCapt, with the average ping times marked.

Thanks folks :D. I'm probably going to go with the WDC data centre - as I look at the centre of population for the USA and USA/EU and it's the closest I can get :).

    Ian,

Just a little FYI since I use to work at SL. They now have servers in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. You might look into that if you want to host the sites in EU instead of the US.

Thanks for the heads up :). I took a look at the AMS datacentre, but as there are more North American visitors I've gone for the compromise of WDC - should be fastest for most of the population in the US and still pretty zippy for EU visitors.

Any other SL tips you've got :D? I've always hosted in DAL01 and been pleased, so I'm interested to see how the move to Washington goes.

You should not see any difference in performance or support by going to the WDC datacenter. The support team is still the same as its just a different set up guys working at the datacenter themselves. Are you using a cloud or a real server or what?
