Is the PVC pipe suppose to fit inside of the bulkhead? or outside of the bulkhead.. ?

same bulkhead I have shown in the pic attached to my overflow box.. the 1'' pvc pipe fits snuggly inside.. but the threads are throwing me off.. is there somehing to conect to the bulkhead before the pvc piping?.. maybe im thinking too much. any info would help! thanks

The pipes slip in the outside. The threads they put on the outside don't fit standard threaded plumbing.
I have the same box and couldn't find any threaded fittings at the local hardware store, but I needed to use flex hose anyway so I just forced it over the threads and reduced it. I later learned that 1" PVC fits inside the fitting. The threads threw me off too. I saw on post that said they used 1"PVC and didn't even have to use cement.
