I'm so sad/worried guys....something is wrong with our ferret Buddy. He was playing around fine like always, and after a while, we happen to see him just laying on the floor, very limp. Usually they do go limp when they're in deep sleep, but when we picked him up, he would not respond...finally, he started wheezing :( Either he got hurt (which I don't know how; the kids are all in bed, and the dogs are upstairs), or he is chocking or something. The hubby took him to the 24 hour vet now. Gonna be a long night :(

As much as we all gripe and complain about our pets being buttmunches, when it comes down to it,it's hard to see them hurt. I hope it's something simple as a blockage, and nothing broken. He seemed in pain...I don't know if he broke a bone or what.

I hope Buddy pulls through, and whatever is ailing him is minor! They are family, even if they are small and weasily!

Hubby pulled into the vet's, checked on him, and he's gone :( I'm still hoping. He's bringing him in to the vet's office now.

Thanks all....he was around 5 years old (typical ferret lifespan is 7-9 years). The vets think it was cancer, which is fairly common in ferrets. We just didn't think he had any cancer because he was always so active. But like our cat a few years ago, he passed away on the way to the vet's. They are making a foot print cast for us. My poor hubby was very very sad because Buddy was really his favorite (he used to go in the pet store and get his ferret fix by getting the ferret smell on himself hehehehe....so I gave in and let him get Buddy -- we used to have 4 years and years ago before we had kids) It didn't help that he died on father's day. My daughter is taking it bad (like with our cat, immediately asked when we can get another ferret  ). I can't imagine how hard it will be on her when either of our dogs pass away!

But thanks for the condolences. Give your pets and extra treat today for Buddy!

So sorry for your loss. This is the hardest part of pet ownership, and it never gets easier no matter how many we lose over the course of our lives. All I know is, during the time in our life that they were with us, they made our lives better.

I miss him, but I'm fine. I'm sure it'll hit me more when it comes time to clean and pack up his cage. I'll probably donate it to a ferret rescue or shelter or something. I doubt we'll be getting another ferret any time soon.

Ok so I had to do some quick explaining with my youngest when he asked why Buddy died...i said "He was sick" but as it came out of my mouth, I realized just 10 minutes before that I had told him his friend wasn't coming over cuz she was sick  I had to quickly say "But Buddy was very very very very very very very very very very sick...your friend is just a teeny bit sick, so she'll be ok" :D

Well, they asked if we wanted an autopsy, but we passed on it. They're almost positive it was cancer because of the lump (it was way too big for him to have swallowed it), and it might have burst. It literally happened out of no where because he was running around like normall all evening. Hubby thought of burying him in the backyard, but I'm worried my beagle might dig him up, so the vet is cremating him for us.
