I was curious about this... Are there protein skimmers in the freshwater world? I guess in a planted nitrates and phosphate aren't a problem...

Protein skimmers don't work in fresh water tanks. Freshwater does not bubble and foam the same way saltwater does. So, the skimmer wouldn't be able to make bubbles to reach the top of the collection cup and remove the waste. Algae scrubbers however will work in both salt and fresh water environments.
