Return Pump

So I built my DIY overflow and return and I'm having a hell of a time getting the pump set to push water back to display tank. I have a ball valve and I can't get it set right. The chamber of my sump that the pump is in drops about 1/4 of an inch an hour.

Was thinking of trying a gate valve in place of the ball value. Any ideas of what else I can try.

Is is possible that your pump is rated for a lot more then your overflow can handle? I had to open up my ball valve fully and let the tank water drain into my sump until the siphon broke on my return line. Then I filled my sump past where I wanted it to be sitting by about 4 gallons. This allowed my return pump to dictate what the flow rate should be. Once you deal with it a few times it gets easier to understand. Let me know if I need to try and explain more.

I know my pump is rated higher than my over flow. I added the ball valve on the pump side to control flow. The over flow does not have a ball valve on it.
