i bought a new skimmer (hob) do i need to have my old skimmer (air driven) hooked up until my new one breaks in?

You should be fine either way, skimmers typically only take a couple of days to break in. What brand is the skimmer?

the new one is a SeaClone the old one is a cheep china ebay purchase

It doesn't really matter -- I don't think the SeaClone is going to be much better than your old skimmer, unfortunately. They aren't very good. If you can, I'd try to return it to the store and get a better one. There are much better skimmers in a similar price range as the SeaClone.
