Snail issue

Reefing newb
I have an issue with snails and other debri being sucked into the one inch intake elbow joints from the sump into my pumps, causing the pumps to at least stop running or worse, burning out. Has anyone ever encountered this and what can you do to prevent it?

I use a plastic strainer to guard my return pump so snails won't go in. As far a debris building up in the pump is normal, maintenance is required on the pump impeller to keep it clean. Same with powerheads, they all need to be cleaned from time to time.

Welcome to living reefs.

I have a piece of gutter guard molded over the end of the pump.... when anything gets caught in it I can easily remove it and clean it . Works great. Its filthy at the moment...lol
