one question i cant find answer for. a sump pump is this to pump water from the sump to the tank or from the tank to the sump. or can it be used for both as i only have one pump and was wondering if tubing could be used as a syphon to drain water into the sump but im not shore if it will keep up with the pump.

You should have some type of overflow ( built in the tank or hang on back)for the water in the display tank to overflow into and be gravity fed to the sump. A return pump will be in the sump to pump water back to your display tank.

What size tank do you have and do you have an overflow? Actually your overflow will be designed with a specified gph overflow and you would size your return pump accordingly.

5 long 2 high 18inch back to front so around 100 gallons? also have a 90 litre sump tank im new to marine tanks so am not to clued up

nope it dose not and the pipe is above water level so idt hink it was for the water to be pump from the sump into main tank?

Actually since you don't have an overflow box it was probably used for your return water to your display and had nozzles on it to discharge at your water line. The tank must of had a hang on back (HOB) overflow box on it to drain to the sump.

Do a search on HOB overflow box so you can get some ideas of your options. You could also drill another hole and install an overflow box in the aquarium.
