Sump question

On a sump set-up, if you are using lets say a Reef Octopus skimmer, Is the pump on the skimmer the return pump, sending water back to the tank?

No, a protein skimmer typically has it's own pump to feed it water, and there's a pipe exiting the skimmer that dumps that water into your sump. Your sump needs its own return pump to pump that water back up to your tank.

So what would be a good pump for a 55 gal tank to have in the sump? I am looking for something $100 or less. I was looking on the Salty Critter site and they have alot of different pumps and of course I know nothing about their reliability.

Danner Mag drives are always good; might be a little loud though. My sump is in the next room. Depending on the distance back to your tank, you can get an appropriate one for under $100. Compare prices with other online sites, like marinedepot.com or saltysupply.com
