Currently I'm running my 55 gallon without a top. I had to take the original glass top off when I mounted my T5 lights but now I worry that a fish may just out. Are there good and bad covers or do I not really need to worry about it?

depending on what fish you have they are or are not needed.....The easiest and most innocuous are made from window screen frames with "bird mesh" from the garden department for the screen.....There is clear mesh available but not readily available at like sLowes or Home Derail, but the black is completely transparent to the tank....
