There's A Bug In There!!!

DesoShade

I'm a noooooob
ACK! I SAW A BUG! I was staring at my little one pound live rock and noticed a few things. First, I noticed there are some GREEN SPOTS growing on it. And even a few purple. Then I jumped... something... MOVED in there... I looked a little closer at one of the holes in the rock and there it was... A BUG! I was like AH! HONEY, THERE'S A BUG IN THERE! She didn't really seem all that thrilled but eh. I was astounded. I'm like, WHOA! LOOK! THERE'S A BUG IN THERE! I started looking around to see if I could see more, but I didn't find any. Just that one. But still, I was excited. I mean, I don't have any fish in my tank yet, but I DO have a rock and a BUG! HA! A BUG!!!!! :bounce:

oh, btw, those green and purple spots, that's good right?

The bug is probably a pod. If you turn off all the lights and look at your tank with a flashlight, you will see tons of them. They are cool to watch, and your fish will think they taste yummy. You will probably see all sort of cool/new things if you take a flashlight to your tank at night.

The green and purple spots sound like the beginning of coralline growth, which is good! Unless they turn out to be some sort of algae, which is bad :(. But without a picture, my best guess is coralline.

If you think your first bug is cool.Order some of that Fiji rock you posted about in your other thread, lol.
You'll have all kinds of wild critters.Peanut worms,bristle worms,pods.
Theres probably well over 100 worms in my rock, plus that many little brittle stars.
The hitch hikers are my favorite part of the hobby.

My girlfriend thinks I'm going nuts. I'm in the other room going apes over a little grey bug and she's out here in the chair reading her book rolling her eyes at me. haha. But dang, I'm really excited! "oo! I just saw it again! hee hee hee there's a bug in there honey!"

Okay so maybe I am over reacting a bit, but hey that's gotta be a good sign to have a bug in there. It means my water is livable. And that little bug is awesome. It's grey. Has two little antennas and moves pretty quick. In and out of the holes in the rock. I keep looking but I haven't seem him anymore. :(

No. No clicks. Sorry, I can't get a picture of it hibye. It's hiding. :(

Biff, I took a picture of those "spots" growing on it. Does this looke like coraline growth to you? It wasn't there before.

Congrats. I get a kick outta my "bugs" too. The first time I saw a pod in my refugium I was all, "I got POOOOOOOOOOOOOODDDS!!" :bounce: I get a kick out of them. Saw my 6-line snatch one off the side of the mag float today. He just swam right up to it and BAM! that pod was gone.

Do you have a refugium on your tank? If you have bugs in the tank, you probably got bugs in the fuge too. Where there's one -- there's more.

The purple does look like coraline .A little bit blurry. Have to agree the little critters are cool to watch.

Hmm. Once you manage to get fish into the tank, how do you keep them from eating ALL of the bugs? you'd think that they would completely wipe them out.

My 6-line is always on the prowl for pods. He annihilates probably hundreds of pods per day. I don't think one fish could ever eat them all. Your refugium is a protected sanctuary for pods and they will continue to grow and reproduce in there. They eventually get washed out into the tank and become fish food.

The pods will get down in the cracks in the rock where fish cant reach them.
Not to mention all the little holes thats all over the rocks.
