Thinking about an anemone...

When you say LFS, you're not referring to Petco are you? Because i have only seen Petco keep anemones under normal 30 watt lights...Anemone was probably on life support back then so chances are it was already dying when you bought it...i dont know whether anemones can recover fast or not. So maybe there is a chance he will still make it. These things do take a while...

Your lights may have shocked the anemone. That could be the reason it looks better when your lights are off.

On a side note:
You should never buy an anemone or any other invert(corals included) thats kept under the right lighting.JMO

The color looks better, but that's about all. The gaping mouth is not a good sign at all. At this point all you can do is watch it and get it out if it starts to fall apart. Don't even try to feed it.

Yote may be onto something there too. If it was only kept under reg. flourescent lights, which is very believable considering how bleached it is, your light may be affecting it. Can you only turn on a few bulbs for a day and see if that does anything?
And I think he meant NOT kept under the right lighting ;)

Think about it.When you buy a coral thats kept under,say,200 watts of PCs and put them in a tank thats got say,400 watts of metal halides, what happens?
99% of the time, the coral will bleach if its not acclimated to the light. Why would an anemone be any different?

Keep in mind, fish stores only need to keep an animal alive long enough to sell it. And they want that to be as quickly as possible. It often takes anemones a long time to die, but once they start going down that track it's very difficult to bring them back. Fish stores can keep anemones under crappy lights because they plan on moving that animal out of the store very quickly, and not keep it healthy long term. This means, by the time you buy it, it's already a goner.

I had 2 BTA in my 46 Bow. The RBTA was doing great, once i made the move to the 75...it went all downhill from there, i'm pretty sure it's on its way out soon, i think it's almost dead. The other one was bleached when i got it, and it was slowly coming back to health, but then when i made the move, it started dying too. So i would deffinately wait a bit, have your system run for a bit longer and then make the move. Also get one that is a decent size so that the clowns can host it quick. If they are small, the clowns won't even get close to it, or at least that's what happened in my tank.

This anemone was the biggest one they have ever had at the LFS, the long tentacles were pretty small for even 1 clown to go in I think, and the bubble tip was too small for any clown to get in it. I'm going to go down to the pet store tomorrow afternoon and see what he has to say about it now, I told him i heard the sebaes were really hard, and the long tentacles were a lot easier, yet he pushed the sebae even though they were the same price? Did he know it was about to die? the long tentacle anemones were dark brown in color (probably really healthy...)
Oh, and on another happier note! My friend calls today and says his family has room for 4 on a trip to vegas staying at excalibur april 13th-17th, and some one backed out, so I'm going along! I know its a huge trend on these forums for everyone to go to Vegas, so I'm going to go see what its all about!

You can walk around on the strip in the middle of the street holding a Long Island in your hand while the police look and smile. That is what Vegas is all about.

Ok, at night I think I figured it out for sure. The anemone really doesnt like the light at all... I woke up and thought I saw it large again, and moving around, so I snapped a pic.

I was hoping it would move into a shady spot some were half under a rock so it could control it's own light, but it didnt. How should I control the light until its used to it? My friend recommended a screen over the top of the tank, like from a screen door. Do you think that would block enough on that part of the tank or does anyone have any ideas?
As it approaches noon the anemone is starting to close up quite a bit in anticipation that the lights will come on soon I think...

The Excalibur is not the nicest hotel on the strip. I have heard horror stories about the small rooms. I have avoided it but I have stayed pretty much everywhere else. It is a lot of fun. Set some gambling limits so you do not lose your ass. There are great food options as well, if you are interested, PM me and I can tell you where to go and what to avoid for good food.

I've only been 21 for 6 months now, only drank/partied outside of my hometown once in Chicago, so Vegas will be a good time I think. I'm not too worried about the rooms since they are a good deal (free!). Do you know if they have a nice aquarium there? I'll be willing to take some tips on good places to go, my friend and his dad have been in saltwater for years and are really into it, so it should be a fun trip.
I want to stay away from more promiscuous places (just to prove to my girlfriend she doesnt have to worry), so no strip clubs or anything like that... Maybe play some black jack, not spend too much money on that though. Shop, I'm sure vegas has some good designer stores. And drink like crazy! If anyone has any recommendations just let me know.
Also about the anemone, the actinics have been on for 1 hour now, its uncurled since they came on and opened up pretty nicely again. It's actually looking really good for a change! I think I'll just leave the actinics on all day and break it in slowly. If it still curls up like its getting too much light Ill put a piece of cardboard across a part of that side of the tank.

Vegas is great. One day instead of losing at the blackjack table, I rented a brand new corvette convertible for 24 hrs for $250 and had a blast running around the desert, red rock canyon, evenwent to the hoover dam. You can rent a classic '57 chevy or a '67 camaro (with good engines)or even a ferrari, a viper or an old caddy with fins.
Have a blast!

That would be sweet! I wouldnt mind renting a new BMW M5 of M3 even if they are out for rent, they are pretty rare yet, the M3 that is. But I'm a poor college student right now, so I don't think ill be betting too much money or spending a ton. I've got 2 grand saved for when I move this summer to upgrade my tank!

oh,yeah, I'd love to get my hands on an M5.
I did have an M3 overnight once. If I actually had one they'd probabl;y take my license within 3 months

several places have good salt water tanks to look at. Silverton Casino, which is on the south end just off the strip has a big one. The Mirage has a great tank at the front desk. Caesar's Palace in the Forum Shoppes has an awesome tank (you will see why I love Sohal Tangs so much there) and the shopping in that place is incredible. The golden nugget has the corner on sharks.

Drinking is free at the tables or slot machines. If you want to get loaded cheap, head over to any casino, find a nickel slot machine, play 1 coin every minute or so and tip the waitress occasionally to keep them flowing. Waitresses will respond to a dollar tip for each drink to the tune of 1 every 5 minutes. You will get sloshed with hard liquor in about 30 minutes for about $6.

Alright the anemone is doing good with part of the tank shaded from light, i figured every day I can move the cardboard a little bit over until its under full light. Its open pretty decently now, not shiveled or anything, I got some krill today and just thought I would give it a shot and see if it would take it or not. I put a piece in for the anemone, went to touch it to a tentacle to see if it would hold it and every time it touched a tentacle it retracted... So I guess ill give it some more time to settle in and then try again in a few days.

Alright, not sure how far we are into the sebae anemone project, but its still doing good, light is still limited or it will shrivel up very quickly. It now holds food that I try giving it, but it never actually eats any of it. Its god a bunch of mysis shrimp held onto its tentacles right now, and a small chunk of krill it never moves to its mouth but just holds on to...It just holds onto the stuff until my cleaner shrimp comes over and steals it from the anemone eventually. Ive been protecting it for a while with the handle of the net chasing away the shrimp, but its not doing anything with the krill in the last hour... what is this things problem?!
