There are also some newer designed sumps which are in a tower shape. One of those would probably fit in there.

yeah but they don't look like they do the job as well as a long one? might just me and i might be wrong..

You would have to have your skimmer on the other side plumbed into the sump.
That set-up would be better then your canister you have now.

Are you sure you can remove the middle divider without risking the integrity of your tank to accommodate a larger sump?

the tank at the moment is a tropical fresh water tank the canister and fish are going to a friend so all im left with when i start this project is a tank and stand oh and lights altho im sure ill need to change them too.....
