what kind of snail is this?

That would be a Sand Burying Sea Snail. :)

Thats either some type of certh snail which is great for the tank.Or some type of welk which could be a predator.

They seem to be a favorite for the local hermits though.

if they are confirmed as ceriths, and my main concern is diatoms on my sand, how many of those should i get? i have 4 waiting to be put in right now

Look under Large Certh Snail at the picture. Yote's got it I think.
