what should be between the stand and tank

The top of the stand I am building will have plywood on it, is there something needed between the glass tank and the plywood?

As long as it is level and the main weight is on the edges you will be fine. Most commercial stand have a open top. You can see my bottom glass from underneath. The weight should be on the edges.

If you're worried about it being slightly uneven you can use that stick on cork lining stuff they sell for drawers. I used it for that same purpose and it seems to have worked out quite well.

Some people use a thin piece of foam between the tank and the stand. But most people don't use anything.
