I realize you had no live stock in there but be aware that some marine reef fish will form a whitish, translucent film around their bodies when they sleep. Scientist still don't understand what exactly it is.

It never ceases to amaze me how I find new smaller life forms in my tank. I just watched two clams I thought were dead open and close last night!
