What the PH...?

Getting the new reef rolling. PH measured low at 7.8 so I added some buffer to raise that up... or so I thought. Tested this evening a day later and it dropped it to 7.4? Frustrated. I want to add some rock to get this thing cycled but I can't even get my water where it needs to be. Any suggestions?

PH doesn't matter too much through the cycling process
It alters naturally throughout the day depending on lights , oxygen & alk
Start your cycle. Don't buffer or chase parameters
It will settle just fine on its own

Once I added the awesome package of live rock from TBS the tank cycled quickly and PH adjusted on it's own. We're good to go. Thanks for your reply
