I say an RO unit. It will save you in the long run. I would have one, but I dont have the room for one in my condo so I have to buy 10 gallons a week or so at the LFS

I say RO unit because I'm not sure how much $$ your looking to spend and RO units are all pretty cheap for what you get.

I think if you dont have the basic test kit, which is what im assuming you mean by API test kit, you should get that. Those tests are a critical part of tank care and you should already have them, but if you dont, then i would highly recommend getting them. It should be noted that the dip test strips are not reliable and shouldnt count as your tank's test kit.

But if you do, then get the RO unit.
