Will clowns host in LS?

I got up this morning and there is this huge bowl dug into my sandbed, right in the one corner of my tank. It's around 2" in diameter and dug pretty much to the bottom(which is only 1" or so). I can't think of anything other than my clowns that could dig something this big

A power head could have done it slowly. It just takes a little jet in a area and before you know it sand has been moved around. Look at it very closely and see if you see ANY sand grains moving around if so I would bet it's from a PH.

No, there was no movement at all, and the powerhead has been in the same location since I started cycling two months back

how many clowns do you have and were they a pair when you bought them ?? it is common practice for clowns to dig to the glass bottom for a smooth spot to lay eggs.

I have a pair, but they are young. They were not a pair together, they were in a tank with several juveniles. I don't even know if they have determined sex yet, although one is larger than the other

the largewr is always the female. sorry biff, but only in the fish world !! i bet it was the clowns doing the digging. or maybe even some type of shrimp (pistol/mantis), but they usually dig UNDER the rock so you would have had a pile of sand and not a hole.

I have a Maroon Clown that uses his tailfin to create a hold right next to his anemone. I have no idea why he does it, but he has been doing it daily for 8 months. They are just weird like that. I tried for weeks to figure it out, but I just gave up since the fish didn't die (dammit, I want it to) and there was no harm done. I just moved a larger rock in front of the hole so you cannot see it on quick examination of the tank.

Its definately the clowns. Checked it out at 2 am and they were digging another one at the opposite corner of the tank. Woke up this morning and they were back to the original one

I'm almost convinced they are getting ready to lay eggs. I'm brand new to this, but have seen fish spawn in the wild and this looks the same. The larger(female) is settling down in the sand, sifting it up as though she is making a spot. The male is patiently waiting above/behind her? If this is actually the case is there anything I should be doing?

A couple things you could do:

Throw on some Barry White.

Put it on youtube.

Bow chikka bow bow.

Start your own fishy porn site for credit card users.

I had a Seba Clown that loved to dig in the sand. She would put head against a rock and make one hell of a sand storm.
She was the only clown I had at that time.

If you think she's going to lay eggs, put a little terra cotta flower pot in the tank. They'll make that their 'nest' and lay eggs on the inside of it.

Thats not uncommon for clowns to fan the sand bed to sleep in,especially when there is no host for them to sleep in.I had clowns do it for years and not lay eggs.I believe yours is still juveniles.

mine did that when I first got them. I didn't have much live rock or anything for them to host at night. they finally started hosting the powerheads and quite making their little holes in the sand.
