Hello Everyone im new to this forum i just started my 10 gallon saltwater tank crappy part is my friend told me he had a tank with a filter so i went and spent all my money on supplies didnt have much money im poor lol but i got some crushed coral about 2 pounds of live rock a heater a power head and a snail my buddy doesnt know what happened to the filter so im kind of stuck this is my first saltwater tank its about three days in the snail is still alive but i was wondering if any body had some unused equipment etc that they could part with i would really appreciate it i've been scrambling around my room trying to find stuff to sell to get stuff for it with no luck

Welcome. Glad you joined a forum before stocking your tank. For starters...do you know what kind of lights you have? Do you have a hydrometer or refractometer? Do you have test kits(strips in a bottle are junk)? The tank is going to take a while to cycle so you'll have plenty of time to research these things. You are going to need about 10 more pounds of rock also. The rock is the largest part of your filtration. As long as you aren't overfeeding,you can do a 10 with no filter at all. Having a hang on back(HOB) filter is handy for running carbon though. Anyways...enough babbling...dont want to overwhelm you to much. We'll get you pointed in the right direction. Research and patients are the 2 most important things in this hobby. Go slow and enjoy the ride.

i suggest you read the following articles, they have some critical information in them. Doing your research before you buy something is going to save you money because there are lots of cheap, crappy products or they just have no business being in a reef, yet they are continually sold for our tanks. Use cragslist to find good deals, there are lots of good deals from people getting out of the hobby.

Also, while your tank is just starting you might want to take the time and get rid of the crushed corals now. All it does is trap poop and uneaten food, allowing it rot and release the nitrates and other bad stuff back into your water to fuel algae problems and can prevent you from keeping the more delicate corals.
