I let me cat play with my balls :) I personally don't care for bioballs, due to the maintenance. Why give myself more work. I used them years ago, and got tired of the maintenance to keep my tank nitrate free.
I run most of my tanks with skimmer,sump,refug I have a filter sock to drain into from my tank, to help reduce bubbles. My nano only runs with live rock no skimmer, or chaeto.
