Zoanthus sp.

Are Zoanthus sp. considered soft corals? I'm looking at getting some corals to give color to my reef tank but I'm a novice to corals and I have a flame angel that likes to nip at corals. Any suggestions?

Yes, zoanthids are a soft coral, any coral without a skeleton are considered soft corals.

To add, a flame angel may or may not nip. Depends on the fish itself.

Each fish has it's own personality. So, it's hit or miss with Angels.

flame angels generally don't go for zoa - they tend to like sps polyps and gorgonian and lps. having said that there are no guarantees with fish so you would hate to come home to have him chew up some rare zoa frag you just got.

I have one for over a year - only had him chew up a photo-syn gorgonian (corky finger) but left everything else alone (including non-photo gorgonians). I have quite a few zoa in my tank

Flames are funny fish...I once had one who was the Model Citizen for about 5 years then turned into the Mega-Pirana of all Acropora polyps!!!! I cought him in the act twice, then I got out the fishing pole!!!! Not really, but he did change tank....
